What families ask for

What Port Orange families ask for most

In Port Orange the first call is often from a hospital room. A discharge date has been set and nobody has said what happens the morning after. These 3 are the answer.

Hospital to home

The first 30 days after a hospital or rehab stay. Priya at the house within 24 hours of discharge to go through every medication, follow-up appointments booked and driven to, a caregiver for the first nights. $2,400 flat.

Personal care

The hands-on help that usually follows. Bathing, dressing, transfers, walking, meals and medication reminders, from 4 hours a visit to 24 hours a day.

Skilled nursing at home

RN and LPN visits between doctor appointments. Medication setup, injections, wound care, blood pressure and heart failure checks, and teaching the family what to watch for. $95 a visit.

The town

Port Orange, newer houses and a lot of grandparents

Port Orange grew fast. Most of it went up after 1980, so the houses are newer than ours in Edgewater, in subdivisions with a brick sign at the entrance, west of Nova Road and out along Taylor Road and Williamson Boulevard. A lot of families bought here when the grandchildren came, and now the grandparents are the ones who need a hand. Spruce Creek winds through the south of the city. The older streets near the river and Dunlawton Avenue have the ranch homes and the water views, and the people who have lived in them longest.

Mark's father came home from the hospital on a Thursday, and Priya was at the house on Friday morning sorting his pills into the box. That is the standard on every Port Orange discharge. Tom handles the long-term care insurance paperwork for families who have a policy and bills the insurer himself, so you are not the one on hold.
